I have offered myself to pay supreme price - Governor Ortom says

- Governor Ortom says he is concerned that not enough is being done about bringing killings in Benue to an end

- He says he will do all in his power to protect the people of the state even if it means his paying 'supreme sacrifice'

- Ortom claimed so much truth is being suppressed in the matter of the killings in his state

Benue governor Samuel Ortom has said he is willing to do whatever it takes to protect the people of the middle-belt state.

Vanguard reports that Ortom made the vow at the weekend while speaking to newsmen.

He claimed that some people had planned to attack him but he has already decided to offer himself like a sacrificial lamb for his people.

He said: “The Bible says ‘you shall know the truth and the truth will set you free.’ Nigeria today, we have no business being where we are. We would have been far ahead of where we are today. It is just that for a long time, we have suppressed the truth.

“But the truth is that I have decided to offer myself. If it will require me to pay the supreme sacrifice for saying the truth, I am ready to do it because the time has come that we must stop promoting sycophancy and mediocrity.

“We must promote the truth. We must respect the constitution and the rule of law. The constitution and the law of our land is the only thing that can guide us to greater height.

“It is the only thing that can lead us to where we want to be. It is only thing that can promote and project us to rank with other countries that are doing well.

“Was it not just yesterday we said ‘Ghana must go?’ Why is it that on West African soil today the whole world is turning their attention whether in investment or whatever? Ghana has become a reference point against Nigeria.”

Ortom's words come just days after the Nigerian army stepped into the matter of the killings on Wednesday, February 7 by commencing Exercise Ayem Akpatuma covering Benue, Taraba, Kogi, Nasarawa, Kaduna and Niger states.

NAIJ.com had reported that Maj Gen David Ahmadu, the chief of training and operations, said it was launched in order to tackle the cases of kidnappings, herdsmen/farmers’ clashes among others.

Additionally, the Chief of the Air Staff Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar announced plans by the Nigerian Air Force to establish a Forward Operational Base in Taraba state to further tackle the incessant herdsmen-farmers clash in the country.

While plans were ongoing to establish a ‘Quick Response Wing’ along the Benue-Nassarawa axis.
