Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi believes Paris Saint Germain can overturn their 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid in Wednesday’s Champions League encounter when they meet for the second leg of the fixture in France next month.

The Parisians took the lead in the 33 minutes through Adrien Rabiot, but a brace from Cristiano Ronaldo and one goal from Marcelo ensured the defending champions continued their title defense in style.

But Messi has urged his former teammates, Neymar and Dani Alves to keep hope alive ahead of the second leg at the Parc Des Princes, saying they are capable of turning the tie around to help their club reach the last eight stage of the championship.

With the result after the first leg, Unai Emery’s men will have to win by two unreplied goals in the reverse fixture to stand a chance to reach the last eight of the tournament.

Meanwhile, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has blamed the center referee, Gianluca Rocchi for his side’s defeat on the night.

He said his players got needless yellow cards which had a negative effect on the players, adding that the offside call against Kylian Mbappe was a wrong one.

The Arab billionaire says such calls would give teams like Madrid an edge over their opponents. He also said that the referee was the cause of his side’s ouster last season, when they lost 6-1 to Barcelona in the second leg having gone 4-0 in the reverse fixture in France.

"We can speak about the referee," he said.

"Two yellow cards, which were not, and an offside against Kylian [Mbappe] that was also incorrect.

"The small things, such as these, can also make the difference against big teams like Real. It was not solely because of this but it helped Real, of course.

"Last year, in Barcelona, the referee. Today, again, the referee. I think that Uefa have to do something.”

PSG are currently at the summit of the French Ligue 1 table with 65 points from 25 games, and they will battle Strasbourg.
