8 APC governors putting pressure on National Assembly to dump electoral amendment bill - PDP

- The controversy surrounding the new election sequence is still ongoing

- There are allegations that some governors under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), are in support of the president's rejection of the National Assembly's move

- President Muhammadu Buhari had rejected the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2018

The national chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, has alleged that eight governors of the APC are trying to influence the National Assembly not to override President Muhammadu Buhari’s rejection of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2018.

Secondus made the allegation on Wednesday, March 14, while addressing ‎PDP youth leaders across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), who visited the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

His words: “I watched on the television where they said government vetoed the Electoral Act because it infringed on the right of INEC to conduct elections. Have you ever heard this before?

“Who is INEC? Is INEC above the law? Is it not the National Assembly that makes laws that govern INEC? Why are they afraid of the amendment? We want to assure Nigerians that the APC government cannot rig this election.

“Eight governors of the APC have been constituted to begin to move from door to door of members of the National Assembly to cage them not to freely make laws for Nigeria.

“We reject that move and we insist that the will of Nigerians must be done. The will of Nigerians must prevail. The APC is planning to rig the elections and INEC is a parastatal of APC.”

Constitutionally, the National Assembly needs a 2/3rd majority to override the president.

Meanwhile, Secondus has revealed that the PDP was coming up with “generation next” programme for re-positioning youths to take over leadership in 2019.

He said that the programme was designed to prepare the youth to take over political leadership in the country.

According to him, with the programme, age barrier will be removed and a 25-year old that is popular and intelligent can be voted into power as governor.

He urged the youths to mobilise young people in their communities irrespective of party affiliation to rescue the country in 2019. He also charged them to rise and defend marginal unity and democracy in the country.
