9 days after release of UNIMAID lecturers, NNPC vows to recommence oil exploration in Chad Basin

- The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation said it will recommence oil exploration in the Chad Basin

- This was made known by the group managing director of the corporation Maikanti Baru

- Baru's announcement followed the recent release of UNIMAID lecturers involved in the activities by some Boko Haram terrorists

The group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Maikanti Baru, has said that oil exploration will continue in the Chad Basin.

Baru said the corporation has concluded all arrangement to recommence exploration activities in the region, Daily Trust reports.

Leading a team of NNPC top management staff to the Kaduna International Trade fair on Wednesday, February 28, Baru said the corporation has discovered four locations in the Benue Trough.

He said the discovery has renewed Nigeria's hope on the prospect of finding oil find in the basin.

Baru said: "On the Lake Chad oil exploration, we have been working tirelessly and we thank the President for rescuing some of the lecturers that were involved in the exploration in the region. We are going back to the Chad Basin with full force."

He said the NNPC's resolve to continue with exploration has been renewed particularly by new findings around Yankari area.

The GMD said the corporation will also intensify efforts in states like Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa and Niger.

Exploration in the Chad Basin was suspended for some months after the abduction of three lecturers from the University of Maiduguri.

NAIJ.com however reported that the lecturers and some police officers abducted by the terrorists group were released.

The lecturers were abducted in Magumeri and Damboa road near Maiduguri, Borno state.

The release of the lecturers and the police officers followed series of negotiations by the federal government with the group.
