Buhari gives MDAs 2-day ultimatum to submit budget to National Assembly

- The president has given directors and heads of MDAs an ultimatum to defend their budget

- heads of these ministries, departments and agencies were given two days - Friday, March 23, to defend their budgets before the National Assembly

- A circular by the secretary to the government of the federation said details of the budgets must be made available to the National Assembly for consideration and passage

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered all ministries, departments and agencies of the government to submit details of the 2018 budget estimate to the National Assembly.

The president in his ordered gave a two-day ultimatum to the MDAs, Daily Trust reports.

He said the budget estimates must be submitted to the National Assembly not later than Friday, March 23.

President Buhari's directive was contained in a circular conveyed by the sectary to the government of the federation, Boss Mustapha.

The circular titled “Submission of Details of the 2018 Budget Estimates by Federal Government owned Agencies, Parastatals and Corporations to the National Assembly” was dated Monday, March 19, with reference number: No. SGF/OP/1/S.3/XII.

It said: “It has come to the attention of Government that a number of Agencies, Corporations and Government owned Companies have not fully complied with the provisions of Section 21 of the Fiscal Responsibility Act (FRA) 2007.

Agencies are reminded that the FRA 2007 provides that consequent upon laying of summary of budget estimates of Agencies listed in the schedule to the FRA alongside the National Budget by Mr. President, it is required that details of such budgets are made available to the National Assembly for consideration and passage.

“Accordingly, Mr. President has directed: That Agencies, Corporations and Government owned Companies in the schedule to the FRA 2007 should comply with the provisions of the law; All submissions (109 copies to the Senate and 360 copies to the House) should be made available to the appropriate Committees of the National Assembly. Copies should also be made available to the SSAP on National Assembly Matters (Senate and House respectively), not later than Friday, 23rd March, 2018," the circular said.

The president also urged all supervising ministers to ensure timely compliance with the directive.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that President Buhari was displeased with 50 MDAs over failure to defend their budget.

The president also threatened to sack the director and heads of these agencies for their laxity towards the 2018 budget.

President Buhari's anger followed revelation by the lawmakers that out of 60 MDAs, only 10 have been able to defend their budget proposal.
