Don't seek re-election - APP tells Buhari

- The APP has advised President Muhammadu Buhari not to seek re-election in 2019

- The party's national chairman, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, said the president should finish his first term and retire from active politics

- He noted that Nigerians voted out President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 for failure in governance

One of the Nigeria's opposition parties, Action Peoples Party (APP) has advised President Muhammadu Buhari not to run for a second term of office during the 2019 general elections.

Daily Trust reports that the APP national chairman, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, ‎gave the advice on Monday, March 19, at the unveiling of the party at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

NAIJ.com gathered that Ugochinyere‎ said that the party, which was registered on August 15, 2017, deemed it fit to hand down the advice in order to save Nigeria's democracy and its image in the international community.

The APP boss said that Nigerians voted out President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 for failure in governance, adding that Buhari would also be voted ‎out in 2019 if he seeks re-election, for allegedly failing to stabilise the nation.

According to him, the Buhari-led government has failed in the areas of security, economy, respect for fundamental human rights, anti-graft war among others.

"Set aside your right to run again, Mr. President, while Nigerians endure the remainder of your tenure till it comes to an end so you can retire with the last vestiges of respect and honour you may have. Support the emergence of a new generation of young leaders with age and experience on their side.

"‎But where you decide against the wishes of the Nigerian people and put yourself forward, you stand the electoral risk of being humiliated at the polls and any attempt by your party to manipulate the electoral process and foist you in 2019 shall be resisted within the ambit of the law.

"‎The President and his APC have exhibited a total lack of capacity and knowledge ‎to protect the lives of Nigerians in basically every state of the federation.

"Our country is filled with rivers of blood ‎flowing into the Atlantic ocean, yet our government is not taking any action. In just less than three months of 2018 alone, there have been mass loss of lives in thirty-four of the thirty-six states and no one person has been brought to book," the opposition party said.

The party said its two cardinal principles in governance if given the mandate in 2019 would be to boost the nation's economy and unite Nigeria.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had previously reported that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo state said President Mohammed Buhari should not to believe the promise by the state Governor Godwin Obaseki that the state would deliver 1.2 million votes to him in the 2019 general election.
