Federal government set to commission 10mw Katsina wind power plant

- A section of the 10 megawatts Katsina Wind Power Plant will be commissioned by the federal government by the end of March

- The generated power from the plant will supply electricity to nearby communities

- The Katsina state government stated that it is committed to seeing the project commissioned

The federal government will be commissioning a section of the 10 megawatts (mw) Katsina wind power plant by the end of March.

The project which kicked off in 2010 was stalled after a French contractor was abducted, Daily Trust reports.

NAIJ.com gathered that while briefing officials of the federal ministry of power, works and housing and a delegation from the Katsina state government, the consultant and assistant project manager for OT Otis Engineering, Pius Onyenagubo, said that the plant could come alive in March.

According to him, installation of 15 wind turbines is 100 per cent completed, while the team awaits materials in a few weeks to fully install 19 other turbines.

He said: “The 15 fully installed turbines will be commissioned by the end of March while the others will be commissioned by the end of the year."

While assessing the project's site, the officials stated that nine of the 15 installed turbines were operational and could deliver 4.5mw, adding that six others require some maintenance work to be done within the week.

It was disclosed that four of the uninstalled turbines were vandalised while most of the wires were stolen.

When the plant is ready, the generated power will be sent through the Liyafa Injection Substation and will supply electricity to nearby communities.

The Katsina state governor, Aminu Bello Masari, who was represented by his special adviser on Energy and Power, Engineer Mansur Mohammed Musa, reassured of the state government's commitment to see the project commissioned.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that Nigeria restarted construction works at the Zungeru power plant in Niger state.

Babatunde Fashola, the minister of power, works and housing, announced the resumption,while delivering a speech titled "Nigeria’s Electricity Challenge: A roadmap for change" at a lecture in Lagos.

According to Mr Fashola, the plant was expected to bring additional 700MW electricity to Nigeria’s 4600MW.
