ECOWAS protocol must be reviewed if affecting Nigeria’s security - Ortom

- Governor Samuel Ortom called for a review of ECOWAS protocol

- The Benue noted that foreign herdsmen were causing mayhem in the country

- He promised to protect the people of the state

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state has called for a review of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) protocol saying it undermines Nigeria’s security.

Guardian reports that the Benue state governor made this comment when he received the comptroller-general of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Muhammed Babandede, at the Benue Peoples House in Makurdi.

Ortom said: “If the ECOWAS protocol has become a cog in the wheel of progress of Nigeria, it is high time we reviewed it.”

The Benue state governor urged that the trans-human movement procedures by member states should be followed..

He noted that security intelligence has shown that foreign herdsmen who gained access into the country without proper documentation were responsible for some of the attacks in the country.

He urged the agency to recruit more Benue indigenes and promised to provide land for construction of its office.

He promised to continue to support the agency and vowed to tackle insecurity in the state.

Babandede condoled with the governor and people of the state over killings and said he was there to patrol the border at Abande in Kwande council area “with a view to checking the influx of illegal foreigners into the country.”

Meanwhile, former Edo governor, Adams Oshiomhole, urged Nigerians not to politicise the herders/farmers problem affecting some parts of the country.

Oshiomhole spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sideline of the 26th Convocation Lecture of the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH).

He said a crime committed should be treated as a crime. The ex-governor said if a crime is committed by anyone, it should be dealt with as such. According to him, there is no need to mix crime with politics.

Oshiomhole said that such problems become more difficult to resolve once they begin to assume political context, whipping up sentiments. He said that once people mix criminality with politics, then it becomes complex.

The former governor said that anyone who commits a crime, regardless of his or her trade, should be dealt with according to law.
