International women's day: Centre seeks inclusion, economic empowerment for women

- A health research centre, CHESTRAD, has felicitated with women on the occasion of 2018 international women's day

- The CHESTRAD president, Lola Dare, also seeks women’s inclusion and economic empowerment

- She said women have come a long way through various interventions aimed at empowering them

The Center for Health Sciences Research, Training and Development (CHESTRAD), has felicitated with the women on the occasion of the 2018 edition of international women's day.

In a statement sent to NAIJ.com,the president of CHESTRAD and global director of I Will Give (IWG), Lola Dare, in a goodwill message, admonished the womenfolk to celebrate the modest progress that has been achieved in promoting women’s inclusion and economic empowerment.

She called for collective focus to rise above the challenges and a collective voice that joins the global call to #Pressforprogress for women and girls.

Dare, who maintained that though, it is not yet Uhuru, said women have come a long way through various interventions aimed at empowering them.

She, however, said there is need to create leadership opportunities for women across all sectors through education and enterprise to bridge the unacceptable gap in gender pay and economic opportunities

According to her, "Combating human trafficking and sexual exploitation as well as forced migration, remains an unacceptably high scourge that disproportionately affects women and girls.

She identified a key role for the application of technology to develop early warning and alert systems that can protect and empower women and girls as crucial, more than ever before.

"The #pressforprogress ‘is universal, and should leave no one behind including women and girls within rural underserved areas and poor urban settings.

"This will require all stakeholders to deepen investments and action towards the elimination of gender based violence through representation and participation of women in the political process according to various international conventions to bridge the gap gender gap.

"Our efforts across all programmes to support women and girls firmly identify with the vision for gender equality expressed in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

"We join other women all over world, including the secretary general of United Nations UN), António Guterres along with the executive UN women, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, in the global call to #Pressforprogress.

According to the secretary general, "We are at a pivotal moment for women's rights. The historical and structural inequalities that have allowed oppression and discrimination flourish are being exposed like never before.

"From Latin America to Europe to Asia , on social media, on film sets, on the factory floor and the streets, women are calling for lasting change and zero tolerance for sexual assault, harassment, and discrimination of all kinds,"

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had previously reported that Nigerian youths across the 36 states of the federation and the federal capital territory, congregated in Abuja, where the unity and peaceful coexistence among the Nigeria people was unequivocally addressed.
