Just In: NASS restrained as court stops lawmakers moves to override Buhari’s veto of Electoral Act amendment

- The Abuja Federal High Court has restrained the National Assembly from taking further action on the Electoral Act (Amendment) bill

- This comes following the president’s decision to withhold assent to the bill which seeks to reorganise the election sequence

- The presiding judge adjourned the case till March 20 and ordered all parties to maintain the status quo; at least till then

The National Assembly has been restrained by the Abuja divison of the Federal High Court, from taking further action on the Electoral Act (Amendment) bill, 2018, which President Muhammadu Buhari refused to assent to, Vanguard reports.

The court, presided over by Justice Ahmed Mmohammed, made its ruling on Wednesday, March 14, following the suit which was filed by the Accord Party.

NAIJ.com gathers that Mohammed ordered all parties to maintain status quo antebellum, “at least between now and the next adjourned date.”

Invoking section 6(6) of the 1999 constitution, the judge stated that the court was empowered to protect the subject matter of the substantive suit pending before it.

Mohammed directed that the hearing notice be served on the 2nd defendant in the case, Attorney General Abubakar Malami; and then adjourned the case till Tuesday, March 20.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that President Muhammadu Buhari is scheduled to meet with the leadership of the National Assembly at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa on Wednesday evening, March 14.

According sources within the presidency, the meeting may not be unconnected to the president's decision to withhold assent to the amendment of the 2010 Electoral Act.
