LG chairman blows hot over attack on northern governor; vows to flush out and prosecute culprits

- The chairman of Bida local government area, Niger state, Mohamad Bagudu, has reacted to the attack on the state governor, Abubakar Bello, by angry youths

- Bagudu claimed that the attack was political, and vowed to flush out and prosecute the culprits

- He warned youths to desist from indulging in any form of political violence and thuggery

Alhaji Mohammad Bagudu, chairman, Bida local government area of Niger on Wednesday, March 14, claimed that the attack on Governor Abubakar Bello in Bida town was politically motivated.

Bagudu told the News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) in Bida that the local council would do everything possible to prevent a recurrence.

NAIJ.com notes that the governor was stoned by youths in Bida on March 8, when he visited the town to assess the damage caused on Bida old market by a night fire. The police has since announced the arrest of six persons suspected to have been involved in the incident.

The chairman stressed that the local council would follow the case to logical conclusion to ensure justice is done. He warned that politics must not be a do or die affair, but should be played with decorum and responsibility.

“We will not condone abnormal behaviour before our leaders; those behind the act would be flushed out and prosecuted," Bagudu said.

He urged youths in the area to shun indiscipline, adding that parents must monitor the conduct and behavior of their children.

“We as responsible leaders will continue to provide the needed peaceful atmosphere for political activities and I hereby warn the youth to desist from indulging in any form of political violence and thuggery," he added.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that Governor Abubakar Bello was challenged by the Action Democratic Party (ADP), to come out clean on how his government spent N481 billion.

Niger state had allegedly received N481 billion from the federal government as monthly statutory allocations, the Paris Club Refund, among others.

Alhaji Tanimu Sarki Kwamba, ADP’s state chairman, threw the challenge at the party’s stakeholders’ meeting over the weekend in Minna.

The party chairman said ADP and indeed Nigerlites were worried that despite receiving the whooping sums, the state government had not been able to provide basic infrastructure across the state; adding that the people needed to know how the monies were spent.
