Panic at Barcelona as top European clubs are set to reach Messi's €700m release clause

- Barcelona strategy director, Pancho Schroder, has described the current market situation as "crazy"

- He believes that top clubs might meet Messi €700m release clause

- Citing that they initially thought that no club could meet Neymar's release clause but they were wrong

Barcelona strategy director, Pancho Schroder, has described the current market situation as "crazy" and insists that even Lionel Messi's release clause of €700m may not be big enough to prevent rivals clubs from matching it.

The Argentine captain committed his future to the club in November 2017 which run until 2021.

The reason for the huge release clause is to fend off interest from big clubs so they will not sign Messi just as Paris Saint-Germain did to sign Neymar for €222m last August – a fee that many thought was impossible.

While speaking to Sky Sports, Schroder said:“We set up a clause which we think is enough to have Messi retire at FC Barcelona,”

“But having said that, we thought a year ago that the clause for Neymar was also good enough to retain the player, and that proved last summer not to be the case.

“Looking at the future, I think, is difficult, but I don't have a crystal ball and these days things are getting a little bit crazy.”
