Parenting is a heavy burden - London-based Nigerian lady sparks heated debate

"Children are a burden (I don't mean this in a bad way, it is what it is)," were the exact written words of a London-based Nigerian lady which sent some Twitter users straight into questioning the instinctual act of humans procreating.

Okoye who is a writer and MH practitioner aired her opinion and shared a worrying perceived truth. In a world where most people count bringing a child into the world a blessing, the social media user shook cored ideals when she suggested they are in fact a big hindrance to lives.

In her words, she pointed out that bringing children into the world alters the lifestyle of parents and realistically very expensive, not to mention time-consuming. She went further to state that given the reality of raising a child, it is sad to have some people bring them into the world with no plan to be there for them.

She said: "Children are a burden (I don't mean this in a bad way, it is what it is). They often slow down careers, are very costly and are very time consuming. It's sad that some are carelessly brought into the world by people unwilling to make those sacrifices."

Although, some agreed her point was valid, others flipped into defense mode and called her a future bad parent, broke woman for harbouring such thought in the first place.

Twitter users went on to lambaste her for the comments and it pushed Okoye to further explain her point, in which said: "Without a kid you typically have to mainly worry about yourself. With a child, you have to factor them into every decision you make. You have another load to carry, you can't be as impulsive and frivolous, you shift your way of living to accommodate them."

After a serious debate, some people agreed with her point, saying she was right but human have chosen to see the blessing in procreation rather than its effect on an individual in a capitalist society.

Perhaps, the demands of society from adults is taking its toll on people. The result is, possibly, making it hard for people to enjoy the time to do things that are hard-wired in their DNA or in this case, have them see it as a "burden"

However, some will agree that the real "burden" are all the things required of each adult to survive in a modern world, a technology-driven society as a constantly evolving species.
