The Sultan of Sokoto sends urgent message to Muslims over sighting of new moon Rajab

- The Sultan of Sokoto urges Muslims to report the sighting of the new moon to the Sultanate council

- The monarch prays for peace and unity in the country

- Muslim groups criticises WAEC over 2018 exams timetable

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, on Friday, March 16, called on Muslims to look out for the new moon of Rajab 1439AH.

The monarch made the call in Sokoto in a statement signed by Professor Sambo Junaidu, the Wazirin Sokoto and chairman of the advisory committee on religious affairs to the Sultanate Council, The News Agency of Nigerian (NAN) reports.

“This is to inform the Muslim Ummah that Saturday, March. 17, 2018, which is equivalent to 29 day of Jimada Assaniya 1439AH, shall be the day to look for the new moon of Rajab 1439AH.

“Muslims are, therefore, requested to start looking out for the new moon of Rajab 1439AH on Saturday and report its sighting to the nearest district or village head for onward communication to the Sultan,’’ the statement said.

The monarch, according to the statement, prayed for peace and unity in the country while urging Muslims to fervently pray for sustainable development and growth.

Meanwhile, Muslim groups have criticised the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for allowing part of its examination clash with the Friday Jummat prayer, Premium Times reports.

In the timetable for 2018 May/June Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE), candidates will write Chemistry paper from 2pm to 5pm on Friday, April 20.

The paper will clash with Muslim Friday prayers which usually hold between 1:30 pm to 3pm R

Ishaq Akintola, president of MURIC, said the timetable was an “injustice” against Muslims, whom he claimed had become “endangered species.”
