Detained 21 protesting followers of El-Zakzaky, 1 supporter get freedom as court grants them bail

- Those arraigned include three minors who got N300,000 bail bond each to be signed by their parents or guardians

- The other suspects got a bail bond of N300,000

Twenty-two members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (MNI), better known as Shi’ite, who were arrested and detained for taking part in a violent clash with the Nigeria police in Abuja recently, have been granted bail by a magistrate court.

A magistrate court in Abuja granted them bail on Thursday, April 19, after they were accused of criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, rioting, causing grievous hurt, amongst other charges by the police.

Premium Times reports that Theophilus Agagda, a spokesperson of Concerned Nigerians, a human rights group which protested alongside the IMN for the release of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, was also arrested with the 22.

It was learnt that among those arraigned before the judge, Yusuf Ubangari, were three minors for whom the judge granted a bail of N300,000 bond each to be signed by either the parents or guardians.

Agagda was also granted bail of N300, 000 bond to be signed by a civil servant of not less than level eight in rank and resident within the jurisdiction of the court, the report said adding that the remaining 19 were also granted bail of N300, 000 bond to be signed by one substantial surety.

The surety is to be a civil servant of not less than level eight in ranking and resident within the jurisdiction of the magistrate court.

The report also quoted a spokesperson of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Abdullahi Musa, as saying the police arrested three truckloads of Shi’ite members during protest with belief that the suspects would be prosecuted in batches.
