The members of the Ondo state House of Assembly have reportedly declared that Governor Rotimi Akeredolu is acting alone on the recent 500 percent increase in tuition fees for the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA).

Premium Times reports that the lawmakers said this while the students of the institution were demonstrating in Akure on Monday, April 9, against the state government.

Speaking concerning the issue, the chairman of the House committee on information, Fatai Olotu, who spoke on behalf of the assembly, noted that the action of the state government did not correspond with the submissions made at the meeting with the management of the institution.

While condemning the school’s management for not being sincere with information given to the leadership of the House at the stakeholders meeting where the pro-chancellor said everybody’s interest would be considered, Olotu was quoted as saying: “The Ondo State House of Assembly will not be part of a policy or decision that would bring untold hardship on the people of the state.”

The House asked the executive arm and the management of AAUA to review the decision to hike the school fees which was against the interest of the people and in keeping with the tenets of democratic practice.

The report said the House rejected the schedule of fees and argued that it was on the high side, especially considering the current economic hardship across the country.

According to the report, the new schedule of fees shows an increase from N25,000 to between N120,000 and N200,000.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that Adekunle Ajasin University students, on Monday, April 9, blocked roads in in Akungba Akoko to protest the sharp increase in school fees which was recently announced.

The report said the students marched through the Oba Adesida road to Alagbaka in Akure, hampering the flow of traffic through the city and armed with placards bearing various inscriptions.
