Jubilation as UK, US promise to spend N21.6 billion on Nigeria’s election in 6 years

- The UK and the US have signed an agreement to increase its funding for Nigeria's election

- The two countries said it will spend $60 million (N21.6 billion) on Nigeria's election till 2020

- The governments of the UK and US said the total funding will help support for free, fair, transparent, and peaceful elections in Nigeria

The United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) on Wednesday, June 27, signed an agreement to increase funding for the Nigeria's election.

The two agencies said it will increasing its commitment to Nigeria's election till 2020 to $60 million (N21.6 billion), Vanguard reports.

A statement released by the British High Commission Press and Public Affairs unit said a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to extend their joint funding arrangements to support Nigeria’s electoral processes through 2020 has been signed.

The statement said: “The additional £5.5 million (US $7.3 million) pledged by the UK brings DFID’s contribution to the joint funding arrangements since 2014 to $26 million, augmenting the $34 million provided by USAID since that time, bringing the total funding support for free, fair, transparent, and peaceful Nigerian elections through this joint mechanism to $60 million over six years."

It was gathered that the amendment which was signed at the U.S. Embassy by USAID Mission Director Stephen M. Haykin and DFID Governance and Social Development Team Leader Oliver Blake, help Nigeria in its democratic process.

“Today’s signing is a reminder of the longstanding, shared commitment of the Nigerian, British, and American people to promoting democracy, in particular, peaceful and inclusive elections,” Haykin said.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that the governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose, has warned his people against selling of their votes.

Fayose told civil servants in the state to resist any move by politicians to coarse them into selling of their votes.

The governor while handing promotion letters to the workers said that the people offering money may not be able to secure the freedom of the workers.

He also said that they would be on their own if caught taking money to vote for a particular candidate on the day of the election.
