The Speaker of the Imo state House of Assembly, Hon. Peter Azi, has reportedly escaped impeachment when he reportedly “tried to evade a discussion on the issue of tenure extension or dissolution of the local government chairmen.”
According to Daily Trust, the incident happened on Thursday, June 28.

At the plenary, the House failed to extend the tenure of the local government transition committee chairmen after it has elapsed.
It was reported that the action of the Speaker almost cost him his position as members started collecting signatures for his impeachment.
However, another member collected the paper and tore it.
Daniel Mikang moved a motion for the dissolution of the chairmen which was supported by Simon Kudu.
Henry Yunkwap who is the majority leader called for extension and was supported by Hon. Ibrahim Baba Hassan.
When the Speaker however called for votes 18 lawmakers voted in favour of the dissolution, one person voted against it and another person abstained.
Some lawmakers went into an emergency meeting after the plenary while others went to confer with Governor Simon Lalong at the Government House.

Meanwhile, the United Nations (UN) on Friday, June 29, voiced concerns over the violent conflicts between herdsmen and farmers in West and Central Africa, with particular mention of the recent killings in Plateau, Nigeria, saying they contravened global humanitarian law.
It, therefore, called for deliberate action to end the conflicts, NAN reports.
NAIJ.com gathers that in a statement by its spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, the UN expressed regret over the killings, saying: “more than 80 people in central Nigeria were killed in land disputes between the two sides this week.
