President Buhari should not have signed 2018 Budget – APC senator

- The controversy over cuts in the 2018 Budget is still ongoing

- President Muhammadu Buhari had brought the attention of the nation to the cuts in the national document

- An All Progressives Congress (APC) senator, Shehu Sani, is of the opinion that the president shouldn't have signed the budget

APC senator, Shehu Sani, has said President Muhammadu Buhari shouldn't have signed the 2018 Budget.

Sani was reacting to complaints by the president that the National Assembly made cuts to the budget, which would affect many capital projects.

The senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, said the president signing the document was consent.

He wrote on Twitter: “The pen for our signatures should be propelled and controlled by the force of our conscience and not the force of compulsion.

“The president should not have signed a document he considers full of infractions. Signature, grudgingly or happily is the crown of consent.”

President Buhari who signed the 2018 budget on Wednesday, June 20, said that the National Assembly made cuts amounting to N347 billion in the allocation to 4,700 projects submitted to it for consideration.

He also said that 6,403 projects were injected, amounting to N578 billion, stressing that many of the project cuts were critical and may be difficult, if not impossible, to implement with the reduced allocation.

He however promised to send a supplementary budget to cushion the effect of the cuts.
