Super Eagles star tenders apology after his misses caused Nigeria defeat against Argentina, his wife blasts Nigerians insulting him

Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo has tendered an apology for his poor performance in Nigeria's 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the last Group D clash.

The 29-year-old failed to convert a glaring chance to put the three time African champions back in the lead in the 76th minute.

He admitted that if he had converted the chances he got after coming on Kelechi Iheanacho in the second half of the game.

"I apologise to Nigeria. I apologise to my team mates," Ighalo told the Cable.

"I take responsibility for this game because I had taken those chances I had that would have made it a different ball game now.

"But that is football and life has to continue.

The Changchun Yatai striker said he wasn't happy the way Nigeria crashed out of the tournament having put in their all.

"It’s a sad day for me, the boys and the country because we went out in a bad manner and we deserved more in the game," he said.

"We had a penalty in the game and another one which the referee did not give.

"I missed a couple of chances that would have finished the game but that’s football because sometimes you win and sometimes to lose.”

Ighalo, however, stated that he is ready to take whatever criticism that is directed at him for the chance he lost to score the winning goal that would have seen Nigeria defeat Argentina for the first time in the World Cup.

"Nobody criticised me, it’s a teamwork. We are 23 players fighting for a single thing. Even if I am criticised, I’ll take it in good faith,” he said.

"Criticism is part of football because if you are not criticised you won’t do well.

"I am ready to take any criticism that will come upon me now and life has to go on. And we still have a better day ahead.

"I am very proud of the team today because we put up a good fight from the start to finish."

Meanwhile, Ighalo's wife, Sonia blasted Nigerians for accusing his husband of poor performance in the encounter.

NAIJ.com previously reported that the Changchun Yatai star believes that the Super Eagles have got what it takes to beat Argentina in their last group clash at the Saint Petersburg Stadium on Tuesday, June 26.

Nigeria defeated Iceland 2-0 to rank second on the table with three points after two games, and they will hope to avoid defeat in order to progress to the next round of the championship.

The south American team on the other hand have got just one point so far in this tourney and they will need an outright win if they don't want crash out of the tourney at the early stages of Russia 2018.
