Bayelsa APC reacts to former chairman's purported defection to PDP

- Bayelsa chapter of All Progressives Congress has reacted to the reported defection of its former state chairman, Chief Tiwei Orunimighe

- The APC publicity secretary, Doifie Buokoribo said Orunimighe is no longer a member of the party, stressing that he had been expelled

- Buokoribo said Orunimighe has the right to join any party of his choice, but should not use APC as leverage in negotiations with his new party

Bayelsa chapter of All Progressives Congress declared that the reported defection of its former state chairman, Tiwei Orunimighe was of no effect as he was no longer a member of the party, stressing that he was expelled last year.

Vanguard reports that the APC in a statement by its state Publicity Secretary, Doifie Buokoribo, said Orunimighe ceased to be a member of APC following his expulsion in August last year.

According to Buokoribo, Orunimighe has the right to join any party of his choice, but should not use APC as leverage in negotiations with his new party.

He said: “Orunimighe and his group were expelled from APC for antiparty activities since August last year by the party’s National Working Committee, NWC.”

He advised members of the public to disregard the defection claim by people who want to join a party of their choice, maintaining that the APC in Bayelsa State remains “united, strong, and focused.”

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had reported the APC, Bayelsa chapter wrote to President Buhari to accuse Governor Seriake Dickson of harassing and intimidating members of the party in Bayelsa.

The leadership of the party, in their letter to President Buhari, said Governor Seriake is putting undue pressure on the management of Nigeria Agip Oil Company (NAOC) to withdraw contracts given to APC members.

Tribune reports that the party members, in a petition signed and issued in Yenagoa by the state APC Chairman, Jothan Amos and Secretary Alabo Martins, said: “Only last week, the state Assembly invited one of our members whose company works for AGIP, to appear before it on allegations of breaching peace in Southern Ijaw local government area of the state.
