- Governor, Seriake Dickson has faulted President Buhari's stand against restructuring Nigeria

- Dickson wondered why the President Buhari would dismiss the general quest of the Nigerian citizenry to restructure the country

- The governor said he does not believe that a presidential system is what the country needs because it is too expensive and wasteful

Bayelsa state governor, Seriake Dickson on Thursday, July 12, described the position of President Muhammadu Buhari on the restructuring of the country as a threat to the stability and development of the nation.

Premium Times reports that Dickson made this known in Ile Ife, in a lecture titled ‘Restructuring and Search for Productive Nigeria’, which he delivered at a programme organised by the Faculty of Arts, Obafemi Awolowo University.

Dickson said: “When everybody in this country is talking about the need to restructure this country, our President, Muhammadu Buhari, made a statement that is not only wrong, but also faulty and could not stand the test of time and a threat to the continued stability, prosperity and development of our country, when he dismissed outright, the notion of restructuring.

“He didn’t stop there, he went ahead to say that those who were in support of restructuring were doing so for parochial agenda.

“President, you are wrong. In fact, the reverse is the case. The majority of Nigerians from the north, south, east, west and Middle Belt, who is making a case for restructuring are indeed the patriots of Nigeria.

“We want a Nigeria that works with equal citizenship. A Nigeria for the many as well as for the few; a Nigeria that we will be proud to call home any day, that we can proudly pledge allegiance to. I don’t believe that a presidential system is what this country needs; it is too expensive and wasteful.

“It easily lends itself to abuses and there are not enough checks. We cannot have a productive Nigeria the way it is structured.

“A Nigeria where the exclusive list is longer than the concurrent one. A Nigeria where the Federal government is a jack of all trade but a master of none.”

He wondered why the president would dismiss the general quest of the Nigerian citizenry to restructure the Nigerian federation which would not withstand the test of time in its current lopsided nature.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had reported that the call to restructure Nigeria was backed by the governor of Bayelsa state, Seriake Dickson, who has also cautioned that the nation will implode otherwise.

Dickson made his comments at the King of Glory Chapel at the Bayelsa Government House, after a service to mark the nation’s 57th independence anniversary celebration, on Sunday, October 1.

The governor described those calling for Nigeria to be restructured, as true patriots.
