Ekiti election: Police personnel allegedly assaulting voters in Ado-Ekiti

A resident of Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital, has accused personnel of the Nigeria Police Force of assaulting voters in her polling unit.

Revealing this via her Twitter handle @MrsBlinky_, the resident simply referred to as 'Abisola', said the polling unit at Ado community high school was not well coordinated, adding that the security agents weren't helpful in ensuring the exercise was hitch-free.

“One of the police officers was hitting voters with a leg of a plastic table. A police woman threatened to use tear gas on us, she actually brought it out,” she tweeted.

She stated that she regretted going out to vote, adding that her husband who convinced her to participate in the exercise also didn't get the chance to cast his vote.

She also complained about the attitude of the electoral officials, accusing them of deliberately frustrating voters.

“For over 25 minutes, the officials weren't attending to us under the guise of the lines weren't organized, they were busy eating and gisting,” she added.

The deputy Senate leader, Bala Ibn Na’Allah, had on Tuesday, July 10, said the 30,000 police personnel deployed to Ekiti state for the governorship election was unacceptable.

Na’Allah, an All Progressives Congress (APC) senator from Kebbi state wondered why large number of policemen should be deployed for an election when the authorities could not deploy 10,000 policemen to secure the lives of people in Zamfara state, who have been attacked by bandits in recent times.

The senator, who was speaking while leading the debate on his bill that sought to repeal the Police Act and re-enact the Police Reform, said such action was not part of the APC manifesto. Ekiti 2018.
