Political asylum has been requested by a Nigerian football fan in Russia, citing fears of political persecution in Nigeria.
Vanguard reports that since the commencement of the World Cup, dozens of people who entered Russia using World Cup fan identity documents have attempted to enter neighboring European countries and request asylum.
NAIJ.com gathers that when the 31-year-old Nigerian arrived Russia for the World Cup, he asked Perovo district of Moscow for political asylum.

An unnamed police source said: “The man said that he had participated in anti-government protests in his country and that his life was currently threatened by Nigerian government forces."
According to report, the asylum request has been transferred to a local migration services branch of the interior ministry.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that Germany was set to deport more than 12,000 Nigerians from the country in 2018.
The country’s global head of programme, migration and development, Dr Ralf Sanftenberg, said Nigerians would be denied asylum status in Germany.
He made this revelation when he visited the special assistant on foreign affairs and diaspora to President Muhammadu Buhari, Abike Dabiri-Erewa.
He said: ”We have over 37,000 Nigerians in Germany and more than 12,000 of them are asylum seekers."
