Northern Christian group accuses MURIC of fanning embers of discord in Nigeria

- The Congress of Northern Nigeria Christians (CNNC) has faulted a recent statement by the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC)

- The CNNC was reacting to MURIC's comments that 5 Christians sentenced to death in Adamawa “must die”

- CNNC described MURIC's spokesman outburst as a provocative statement

CNNC, a registered body of all the Christians in the 19 northern states and the FCT has faulted the statement credited to MURIC that the five persons sentenced to death by hanging by an Adamawa court “must die.”

An Adamawa state High Court siting in Yola, the state capital, recently condemned to death by hanging 5 Christians namely: Alex Amos, Alheri Phanuel, Holy Boniface, Jerry Gideon and Jari Sabagi.

The court found the culprits guilty of premeditated attempt to kill three herdsmen, and eventually killing one of them by throwing him into a river.

Further reports claim that the supposed killers took the law into their hands, after herdsmen killed 48 members of their community in 2016.

The judgment had sparked outrage in the Nigerian Christian community, as many accuse the government of failing to bring killer herdsmen to justice.

A statement issued by Mr. Larry Joseph Yammai, media and publicity secretary of the group said, “CNNC condemns the recent call by MURIC that the Adamawa 5 “must die.” It is horrifying that despite the liberty of the defendants to file an appeal to a higher court of competent jurisdiction, MURIC has foreclosed that process by its extra-judicial pronouncement.

“It cannot be said that MURIC acted in ignorance but deliberate mischief. CNNC therefore unequivocally denounces this recent action by MURIC. CNNC also calls upon the body to immediately withdraw its provocative statement on the Adamawa 5.

“CNNC notes with growing concern the rapidly deteriorating security situation across the nation particularly in the north. Despite the acclaimed government responses at various tiers CCNC is worried that certain stakeholders are still fanning the embers of discord.

“CCNC is also concerned about the impunity of the recent proposal by the federal government to implement the “National Livestock Transformation Plan” without any form of consultation with the various stakeholders particularly in the farming communities where CNNC membership is prevalent.”

Meanwhile, a former Archbishop of the Catholic Church in Lagos, Cardinal Anthony Olubunmi Okogie, has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of shielding killer herdsmen and treating them with kids gloves.

Cardinal Okogie made the claims in an open letter written to the president titled: “Dear Mr. President, Call a Spade a Spade.”

He also asked the president to renounce his seat following what he described as the Buhari’s failure to secure the lives and property of Nigerians.
