Security agencies reportedly investigate media reports of Plateau killings

- PRNigeria says a top security source confirms the investigation which will be spread out for more results

- The sources says preliminary investigations have already been concluded into the most misleading of the reports

- The security agencies believe the reports could have caused further mayhem, hence the need to probe their sources

Nigeria's security agencies have kicked off a probe into the manner in which media house reported the recent attacks on Plateau state by killer herdsmen, PRNigeria reports.

According to the report, the agencies are worried about the ethnic and religious angle reactions that followed the attacks on some communities in the middlebelt state have taken.

The report quoted a top security officer who spoke in confidence as saying that a wide investigation is being planned.

This, the source said, is as a result of the alarming development the reports caused which could lead to maiming, killing and destruction of properties.

Already, the agencies have carried out preliminary investigations into the misquoting of a Miyetti Allah representative. The source says investigators are set to pull call logs, IP addresses and more of those involved to confirm what really happened.

“The news report of the alleged interview with Mallam Danladi Ciroma, a representative of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Jos, which was published by dozens of media houses has security implications that can cause confusion and further escalate the conflict in the polity.

“Since there are confusions over the authenticity of the said interview and the purported sources, investigators are determined to obtain the call logs and records ranging from text messages to pictures, IP addresses and cell towers used from the mobile phone providers,” the source said.

NAIJ.com recalls that a media house has apologized for error in its reports which was written by a journalist who has since been dismissed.

Meanwhile, the Miyetti-Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria southeast zone has alleged that Berom militia should be held responsible for the killing of over 200 persons in Plateau state.

Gidado Siddiki, the zonal chairman of the southeast zone, in a press statement made available to journalists in Awka, the Anambra state capital, also dismissed reports that the crisis in Plateau state is exclusively caused by Fulani herdsmen and targeted at the Christian population alone.

He said there was evidence that showed that Berom militia mounted roadblocks at some locations and molested whoever they counted an enemy, Christian or Muslim.
