Sports minister Dalung proud of Team Nigeria after winning 105 medals at the African Youth Games in Algiers

- Sports minister Solomon Dalung is proud of of Team Nigeria after their feat at the recently concluded African Youth Games

- They won a total of 105 medals from 19 sports and most of the gold medals came from weightlifting

Team Nigeria carted away 105 medals from 19 sports at the recently concluded 3rd African Youth Games in Algeria.

They won 29 gold, 33 silver and 43 bronze medals and finished among the top five teams on the medals table.

Weightlifting gave Nigeria the highest number of gold medals, 12 gold, while the country won the highest number of medals in Wrestling - winning 19 medals made up of three gold, 10 silver and 6 bronze medals.

In Athletics, Nigeria won a total of five gold, three silver and five bronze to make up a total of 13 medals in total.

Four gold, three silver and one bronze came from canoe/kayak, and badminton team clinched two gold, two silver and seven bronze.

Nigeria's boxing team claimed two gold, two silver and two bronze, but were unable to win any medal from hockey, beach volleyball, tennis and swimming at the Games which was held from July 18 to July 28.

However, the Nigeria's sports minister Solomon Dalung is proud of the achievements of the contingents, saying they made the country proud.

"Further more, the 250 athletes has indeed have made Nigerian proud with their outstanding performers.

"Also, team Nigeria clinched 3rd position on the medals table, just behind Algeria and Egypt."

NAIJ.com earlier reported that billed to hold between October 3-6, the games will feature 20 teams across the continent with the top three teams qualifying for the Special Olympics Unity Cup in Brazil in 2013.

The Special Olympics Africa Unity Cup is a seven aside football tournament featuring four footballers with intellectual disabilities and three without intellectual disabilities making a team.

According to the National Director of Special Olympics Nigeria, Mrs. Folashade Bolumole, the goal of the Unity Cup is to support the movement of inclusion and acceptance for people with intellectual disabilities and is an extension of the Special Olympics Unified Sports program.
