The chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), Professor Itse Sagay has faulted the attempt by eight APC lawmakers to commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state.

Sagay told Daily Independent in a report published on Tuesday, July 31, that the eight APC lawmakers lack the number to begin impeachment proceedings against the governor.

He said lawmakers will first need one-third of the members of the House to sign a document of intention to impeach, which after two weeks must be signed by two thirds of the House.

“Eight out of 30 lawmakers, the number is not enough. They cannot successfully impeach the governor if they don’t increase their number," Sagay said.

“They cannot commence proceedings because they need one third of the members to sign a document of intention to impeach, which after two weeks must be signed by two thirds of the House. So, presently they are not enough to kick off the process."

Meanwhile, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi, has cautioned those behind the impeachment saga in Benue state to desist from ridiculing Nigeria before the comity of civilised nations.

Makarfi in a statement on Monday, July 30, by his spokesman, Muktar Zubairu Sirajo, described the drama playing out in Benue as unlawful, disgraceful and undemocratic, The Tribune reports.

He faulted a scenario where more than 2/3 of a 30-member House of Assembly will be denied access to the House by the police, while giving state cover to other members to sit and even attempt to impeach a democratically elected governor.
