Breaking: Irate youths set Osun police station ablaze, protest against alleged killing of resident by SARS (photos)

- The deceased was said to be spending holidays in the town when the ugly incident happened

Some irate youths on Friday, August 24, set a police station ablaze in Iwo, Osun state, for the alleged killing of an undergraduate, Tunde Nofiu, by an officer attached to the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) in the state.

NAIJ.com regional reporter in Osun state, Sola Adetona, reports that Nofiu was said to be spending holidays in the town when the ugly incident happened.

It was gathered that the student who was going to Iwo from Olupona was shot dead on Thursday night, August 23, and the incident led to a protest by the angry youths.

The name of the school of the deceased could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.

But it was gathered that the youths of the town gathered and set ablaze Iwo police area command on Friday morning, August 24.

The officer were said to have escaped the scene after killing Nofiu.

The angry youths made bonfires around strategic locations in the town.

The commissioner of police in Osun state, Finihan Adeoye, was quoted to have said that he could not give the exact account of what happened.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had previously reported that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, to immediately overhaul the management and activities of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

It was reported that the personal assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on new media, Bashir Ahmad, made it known in a tweet on Tuesday, August 14.

He said: "Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, orders immediate overhaul of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS)."

Osinbajo said that based on the persistent complaints and reports on the activities of SARS that border on allegations of human rights violations, there should be overhaul of the management and activities of SARS to ensure that any unit that would emerge from the process should be intelligence-driven.
