Reactions have trailed the defection of Senate president Bukola Saraki, from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Apart from reactions from Nigerians from all walk of lives, foreign media has also reacted to Saraki's breakup with the party under whose umbrella he emerged as the Senate president.
Saraki took to his Twitter page to announce his defection from the party on Tuesday, July 31, saying that the decision was taken after extensive consultations.
He tweeted: "I wish to inform Nigerians that, after extensive consultations, I have decided to take my leave of the All Progressives Congress (APC)."
Justifying his exit from the party, the Senate president accused some elements in the APC of making peace and cooperation difficult in the party.
Reacting to the Senate president's defection, Reuters said: "Bukola Saraki, the country’s third most senior politician, defected to rejoin the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), becoming the most high-profile figure to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC).
"Last week, 16 lawmakers in the upper house left the APC, as did 32 in the lower house and this month an APC faction said it no longer backed Buhari.
"The loss of influential figures and divisions in the party peels support from Buhari within powerful patronage networks and among voters ahead of the election scheduled for February 2019."

In his own report, Daily Nation said: "Nigerian Senate president Bukola Saraki on Tuesday quit the ruling party and joined the opposition, dealing yet another blow to the country's leader Muhammadu Buhari's re-election bid.
"The opposition PDP has welcomed a raft of defections of APC lawmakers and other politicians into its fold in recent weeks.
"Earlier this month, more than 30 parties, including the PDP, said they were forming a new alliance, while a splinter group formed within the APC of disaffected party members.
"Saraki, 55, despite being a member of the ruling party, has had a running battle with the government.
"He believes he has been marked out as a critic and rival by the presidency. Many of those under investigation or on trial for corruption are PDP members.
"His supporters believed his troubles started when he plotted with PDP senators to clinch the Senate presidency in defiance of APC's choice for the top job.
"Although Saraki is rumoured to have presidential ambition, he has yet to make it public."

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that former vice president Atiku Abubakar, reacted to the defection of Senate president Bukola Saraki to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Reacting to the news, the former vice president expressed joy over Saraki’s defection via his Twitter page.
He tweeted: He tweeted: “I received the news that the Senate President, Senator @bukolasaraki, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress, with great joy."
