Secondus, after meeting with Saraki, Tambuwal, Atiku, others reveals PDP's campaign code of conduct

- The PDP has revealed its code of conduct for its aspirants ahead of the 2019 general polls

- The National Working Committee (NWC) charged its aspirants to avoid the use of negative speeches during their governorship and presidential campaigns

- The announcement was made in Abuja on Wednesday, August 29, after talks with top party members

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has warned its presidential aspirants against the use of negative campaigns ahead of its forthcoming primary, The Sun reports.

This came after the PDP NWC met with presidential aspirants in Abuja, on Wednesday, August 29. A party source revealed that the meeting, which was held at the Transcorp Hotel in Abuja, was at the instance of the PDP national chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, to brainstorm on how the party can have a peaceful presidential primary.

The meeting was attended by the Senate president Bukola Saraki, former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, former Plateau state governor, Senator Jonah Jang, Sokoto state governor, Aminu Tambuwal, and former chairman of the PDP caretaker committee, Senator Ahmed Makarafi.

Other presidential aspirants who attended the meeting were Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Minister of special duties and intergovernmental affairs, Tanimu Turaki, former Sokoto state governor, Atahiru Bafarawa, while Gombe state governor, Ibrahim Dankwanbo, former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido and Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed were absent.

It was gathered that the aspirants were advised to abide by the rules of engagement, so that the result of the primary does not negatively impact on the party in the general polls.

The PDP said: “Since some of them have insisted on contesting in the primary, we can’t force anyone to step down. But, we are also mindful of not having a rancourous primary.

"The idea of the meeting was to spell out the rules of engagement for the aspirants and make them understand they need to put Nigeria first.”

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com reported that the PDP had affirmed that it would not contest the 2019 general polls with a house in disarray.

It further said that the party would ensure that it conducts a free, fair and credible primary election free from interferences by candidates.
