Abia PDP finally picks Governor Ikpeazu as sole candidate for 2019 governorship polls

- Ahead of the 2019 general elections, a caucus of the PDP in Abia has finally reached a consensus on the candidate for the governorship polls in the state

- The group, known to be the highest decision-making body in the party, after its meeting on Friday, August 31, chose Governor Okezie Ikpeazu as its sole candidate

- The caucus said that with Ikpeazu in power for the second time, development and progress will be deepened in the state

With the 2019 governorship election fast approaching, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia has adopted incumbent governor, Okezie Ikpeazu as its only candidate, The Guardian reports.

The party’s state chairman, Chief Johnson Onuigbo, after a caucus meeting held at the Government House, Umuahia, on Friday, August 31, said that the caucus had a consensus on the decision after deliberating on issues crucial to its progress.

According to a communiqué read on behalf of the PDP by Chief Ibe Nwadioha, the party’s secretary, the caucus also passed vote of confidence on the governor, as he had made for his laudable efforts.

Urging members to support the governor’s second term bid, the party praised its leadership for upholding its ideals and legacy.

However, reacting to endorsement that all aspirants to elective offices will be given a level playing ground, a member of the party, who pleaded for anonymity, described the decision as contradictory.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com reported that a group under the aegis of Abia Concerned Citizens (ACC) had obtained the expression of interest and nomination forms for Abia state governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, to seek a second term in office.

The group said it was motivated to purchase the forms for the governor to encourage him to continue his good works beyond 2019.

Leader of the group, Ambassador Bestman Eruba, said they were impressed with the stewardship of Governor Ikpeazu since he became the number one citizen of the state in 2015, adding that another four years would help take his development strides across the state.
