Although, Messi didn't make it through to the final three this term, Modric beat his former teammate Ronaldo and Liverpool attacker Mohamed Salah to the prize.
However, the awardees were selected based on voting from national team coaches and captains as well as a number of journalists.
For the Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, the German tactician voted the Croat as his best player of the year.
