Emerging reports have it that the inspector general of police, Ibrahim Idris, on Wednesday, September 5, again issued warning to Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) to stop indiscriminate search of citizens.
Premium Times reports Idris reportedly issued the latest directive at a training organised for SARS operatives in Anambra State Wednesday afternoon.
Idris reportedly made this known through Amaechi Elumelu, the national coordinator of X-squad.

According to him, “You are barred from searching handsets and laptops of innocent citizens, unless the search is directly linked to a case or directed by IGP or any person or persons he so delegated.”
Elumelu also reportedly warned officers to stop keeping suspects in perpetual custody without filing court charges, saying they now have a maximum of two days to take issues to court.

Elumelu said: “Forthwith, any FSARS officer who detains any suspect beyond 48 hours without recourse to the court risks dismissal.”
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had reported that the vice president, Yemi Osinbajo, said President Buhari ordered an immediate restructuring of the SARS, in order to check the series of atrocities allegedly committed by the unit.
He made the disclosure while responding to questions from young Nigerians at a town hall meeting to mark the launch of the National Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), Clinics in Ibadan, Oyo state.
The vice president, in a statement released by his senior special assistant on media and publicity, Laolu Akande, stated that President Buhari’s directive was in recognition of the concerns raised by Nigerians, about SARS operations.
He stated: “Many people are complaining about the atrocities of SARS, people are saying there should be no more SARS.“
