Real Madrid star Luka Modirc has reportedly admitted to two counts of tax fraud and accepted an eight-month suspended prison sentence as part of a plea bargain deal with Spanish prosecutors.

Spanish media outfit El Mundo said Modric would be given the chance to substitute the prison term for a fine totalling £54,000.

It was reported earlier this week the Croatian captain with fellow countryman and Liverpool star Dejan Lovren could face five years behind bars.

The recently voted 2018 World Cup and Champions League's best player, was accused last November of tax fraud of up to £783,640 in image rights in 2013 and 2014 using a limited company based in Luxembourg.

According to El Mundo, Modric would have to pay a total of £1.26m if he wanted to wipe his slate clean with the Spanish taxman for 2013 and 2014.

Recent reports in Spain have claimed the former Tottenham midfielder has also been fined £1.08m for irregularities in his 2012 tax return which he is contesting but is being dealt with administratively rather than by way of criminal proceedings.

Earlier this month Modric's Real Madrid teammate Marcelo, agreed to a four-month suspended prison sentence and a fine of £670,000 after making a deal with Spanish prosecutors over his tax fraud case.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had earlier reported that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has slammed Serie A club Inter Milan for trying to sign Luka Modric without paying for him.

The Croatian who was crowned UEFA Player of the Year, became the San Siro outfit's top transfer target following his impressive season for club and country.
