Zoning of political offices leaves the country in the hands of mediocre - Donald Duke

- A presidential aspirant, Donald Duke, has criticised the zoning of political offices

- He said such process leaves the country in the hands of worst men

- He also added that if elected, welfare of the people would be his priority

A former governor of Cross River state, Donald Duke, has called for the crapping of zoning of political offices in the country, adding that such process leaves the fate of the country in the hands of politically incompetent people and mediocre.

The Punch newspaper reports that Duke, who is a presidential aspirant on the platform of Social Democratic Party (SDP) said this on Monday, September 24, in Abuja during a meeting with the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum.

NAIJ.com notes that the former governor expressed high dissatisfaction with the zoning formula, saying that the nation is too dire in need of a leadership with blueprints and cardinal objectives instead of putting the progress of the nation on ethical consideration.

He said: "The economy is not growing because by virtue of our population growth, the economy should be growing at 4 per cent, we must exceed our population growth and Nigeria should by now have a trillion dollar economy.

“I am running for the president because Nigerian deserves as many options as possible. Things are too dire for zoning and zoning, I know, has only produced mediocres in our midst.

"The minorities should be canvassing for zoning of political offices, but I find it strange that it is the major ethnic groups that are demanding for zoning.

Duke also noted that the Nigerian economy is not out of the recession as claimed by the federal government when looked into the original statistics.

Recall that NAIJ.com earlier reported that the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum led by chief Edwin Clark had promised to invite all presidential aspirants across parties including President Buhari to table their manifestoes before it.

So far, the forum has successfully invited Atiku Abubakar, Attaihiru Bafarawa, Sule Lamido and recently the former governor of Kano state, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Kwankwaso in his address promised to put infrastructure and the welfare of the people of Nigeria a top priority. He lamented the poor state of Nigerian roads, adding that it sinks his heart whenever he passes through all the dilapidated roads for his campaign tour.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF) also known as the leaders of thought, said they would invite President Muhammadu Buhari of All Progressives Congress (APC) for questioning on his plans for Nigeria ahead of the 2019 elections.

They made the disclosure after grilling a presidential aspirant on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, based on his presidential aspirations.

The forum had on Sunday, September 9, invited Atiku to a meeting in Abuja to enable the former vice president explain his plans for Nigeria, if elected president.
