Every healthy woman has fallopian tubes and their job is to carry mature egg from the ovaries to the uterus. If a woman wants to become pregnant, then at least one of these tubes should be open. But, unfortunately, there may be a situation where the sperm and the egg cannot get into the fallopian tubes for fertilization to take place. Blocked fallopian tubes have become a problem for about 40% of infertile ladies, so it is very important to identify the problem and begin effective fallopian tube blockage treatment. But is it really possible to get pregnant despite such a serious problem?
We’ve prepared top 7 steps to help you get pregnant. Find out how to open blocked fallopian tubes?
Step#1
First, take the tests and analysis
- Remember that you may not have any symptoms. Although some ladies with blocked fallopian tubes may feel abdominal pain or increased vaginal discharge, most women do not experience any signs of blocked fallopian tubes. Usually, women discover this serious problem only when they are trying to get pregnant.
- Make an appointment with a doctor if you do not get pregnant after trying for about a year. From a medical point of view, ‘infertility’ is when you cannot get pregnant after at least one year of regular unprotected sex. If you are in this situation, arrange a meeting with your doctor or gynecologist.
If you are over 35, do not wait a whole year. Make an appointment six months into regular unprotected sex.
Note that ‘infertility’ and ‘sterilization’ are not the same thing. If you are infertile, you can still conceive a child, with or without medical assistance. Do not think that you can never become pregnant.
- Evaluate your fertility. Doctors usually recommend performing assessments of the ability to fertilize, both for you and your partner. Your man will have to give a sperm sample so that a specialist can eliminate problems that have to do with the number of spermatozoa and their mobility. Most likely, you will need different tests to learn whether you have a normal level of hormones and if ovulation is proceeding correctly. If all these tests are normal, your doctor will prescribe checking the condition of the fallopian tubes.
- Consider sonigysterography. Your doctor can recommend trying sonigysterography - a treatment procedure that involves the use of ultrasound in order to find congestion in the uterus. Substances in the uterus can sometimes cause obstruction of the fallopian tubes. Hysterosalpingogram (GHA) is a medical procedure, during which a special dye is injected into the fallopian tubes through the cervix. X-rays determine whether your pipes are open or closed.

A hysterosalpingogram is done without anesthesia, and you should experience only slight cramps or discomfort. However, you can use some drugs that reduce the pain about an hour before the procedure.
- Ask your doctor if it is advisable to do laparoscopy. Depending on the results of your sonogystrophy and hysterosalpingogram, your doctor can recommend laparoscopy, a special medical procedure in which a cut is made near your navel to find (and, in some cases, remove) any tissues that block the tubes.
Mostly, laparoscopy is done only after all other infertility tests have been completed. This is partly because the procedure is considered risky: it is conducted under general anesthesia, therefore it has all the risks associated with a serious operation.
Step #2
Find out your diagnosis
The results of these tests may show that you have no, one or even two blocked fallopian tubes. After that, ask your doctor about the degree of obstruction. A specific diagnosis, perhaps, will help to determine a treatment plan. There are a lot of cases, when the problem is solved on its own and the woman gets pregnant.
Step #3
Consult your doctor about infertility medications
If only one of your tubes becomes impassable and you are healthy, your doctor may prescribe a course of special drugs. These drugs stimulate the pituitary gland to produce follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), so increasing the likelihood of ovulation and pregnancy (through the open fallopian tube).
Note that this treatment will not help if both your fallopian tubes are blocked. In this case, you will have to choose more intensive treatment options.
Step #4
Try selective uterine fertilization
If you have obstruction near the uterus, your doctor can recommend selective uterine fertilization - a medical procedure that is performed by inserting a cannula through the uterus, cervix and fallopian tubes.
Step #5
Think about the special laparoscopic surgery
If your doctor thinks you are ready for surgery, he will recommend laparoscopy. It can help open your blocked tubes and also remove scar tissue. But laparoscopic surgery will not always help, so you should make this decision with your doctor after considering all the causes and the degree of obstruction.
Step #6
Discuss the possibility of salpingectomy with your doctor
Salpingectomy means removing part of your fallopian tube. It is considered the best method of purification than other laparoscopic operations for hydrosalpinx, and this is often done before attempting IVF.
Step #7
Consider the possibility of in vitro fertilization
If these steps do not work (or if your doctor thinks you are not ready for this kind of procedure), you still have the opportunity to become pregnant. The most common alternative option is in vitro fertilization (IVF), in which the doctors fertilize the egg with sperm outside the woman's body, then place the embryo or embryos in the uterus. Such method bypasses the fallopian tubes, so that obstruction is not a problem.
Know that even if nothing helps to eliminate the blocked fallopian tubes or contribute to pregnancy, you still have other options. Consider adoption or surrogate motherhood, if it is so important for you to become a mother.
Keep in mind that if you have only one fallopian tube blocked, you can get pregnant without any treatment at all. The decision of whether or not it should be treated depends on the cause of the blockage and health of your and your partner's organs. Discuss other possible options with your doctor.
Infertility can be an extremely painful and unpleasant diagnosis, so it is very important to control your emotions. Make an appointment with a therapist or join a support group if you feel depressed and try to maintain a healthy lifestyle: have a nutritious diet, do regular exercise and sleep better.
