Manchester United drop to 3rd after disappointing in final game of 2017

Manchester United drop to third position on the log following a 0 - 0 draw with Southampton in their match day 21 Premier League clash at Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho's side who came into the game with two consecutive draws had the better chances and most possession but could not get past a string Saints defense.

The highlight of the first half was Romelu Lukaku having to be stretched off after a clash of heads with Wesley Hoedt in the 14th minute.

The match was delayed for about five minutes as Lukaku received treatment, with the Belgian striker apparently administered oxygen.

Marcus Rashford replaced the Belgian as United continued in search of a goal.

In the 33red minure Manchester United thought they should have had a penalty when Yoshida seemed to handle Jesse Lingard ball over his head but the referee was having none of it.

Two minutes before the break Lingard saw a headed effort just go wide from Mkhitaryan's cross from the right.

Matic tried his luck from range in the 45th minute but his low shot took a deflection and it was comfortably saved.

The Saints should have been ahead six minutes after the restart but were De Gea came to the rescue as he denied Shane Long from point blank range.

In the 57th minute Mkhitaryan tried his luck but it was saved while Dusan Tadic sent an effort just over 15 minutes from time.

Pogba thought he has scored in the 81st minute when he tapped in at the far post but he was flagged offside.

That was how the game ended as United drop to third place on the log with 44 points, one behind Chelsea who are second and three ahead of Liverpool who are fourth.
