Paris Saint-Germain winger, Angel Di Maria, has revealed that he came really close to joining former rivals Barcelona last summer.

The Argentine international was speculated to depart from Paris Saint-Germain before the start of the season following Neymar's £198m world-record arrival from Barcelona.

The former Los Blancos winger was 'close' to a move in the opposite direction as the PSG bosses looked to balance their books following the Brazilian's move from the La Liga giants, but he was left disappointed after any potential deal collapsed.

Speaking to TyC sports Di Maria said: "I was really close to joining Barcelona but in the end, it wasn't to be,"

"I started 2018 on a good foot, though, and I am really happy. I like assisting goals more than scoring them."

Di Maria made cameo appearance for PSG this season only in the absence of Mbappe, first through injury and more recently through suspension following his red card at Rennes last month, the 29-year-old has five goals in six games, with his last coming in Tuesday's 4-1 win at Sochaux.

He has made a strong case to start when on his return to Real when PSG travel to Spain on Wednesday night February 14, for their Champions League last 16 showdown.

Di Maria spent an amazing four season at Madrid, winning the Champions League, the La Liga title and Spanish Cups, playing alongside Cristiano Ronaldo in all four.

However, while Di Maria spent a large chunk of his club career with the Portuguese superstar, his allegiances still lie with compatriot and rival to Ronaldo, Lionel Messi.

He said: "Messi is always the best, he's the best every year. Cristiano Ronaldo's a special player, but Messi's from another planet.

"There are no words to describe Messi, he always surprises you.'"
