Police working with politicians against me - Melaye cries out, petitions US, UK, Canada, others

- Melaye has petitioned the Inspector General of Police over an alleged threat to his life

- The senator alleged that the police is working with some politicians to assasinate him

- He has also petitioned the United Nations and several other international bodies

Senator Dino Melaye, representing Kogi west senatorial district, has petitioned the Inspection General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, the ambassador of United States, United Nations and the High commissioner of the United Kingdom in Nigeria over an alleged threat to his life.

The senator has also petitioned the Ambassadors of Germany, Canada, Amnesty International, Transparency International and the Human Rights Watch.

Punch reports that Melaye, in separate petitions sent out to local and international bodies, alleged that there was a plan to murder him “extrajudicially” by his “political enemies” in collusion with the men of the Kogi state police command.

In the petitions signed on behalf of Melaye by his lawyer, Messrs Ricky Tarfa and Co, the senators urged the IG of police to raise a neutral police team to investigate the allegations of gunrunning being levelled against him by the Kogi state police command.

Melaye, in the letter personally signed by him and addressed to the UN and other envoys in Nigeria, urged them to save him from harrasment and victimisation

He said: “As things stand, I live each day in constant and reasonable fear for my life, looking over my shoulders and being harassed by the named politicians. The police are hand in glove with these politicians.

“I am a law-abiding citizen who voluntarily submitted myself before the FCT High Court to answer charges which I know are unsustainable.

“However, the situation I am in right now gives me a reason to believe that the law enforcement agencies, particularly the police, are in cohorts with my political enemies and can even go to the extent of terminating my life extrajudicially.

“I therefore seek your intervention in the circumstances to ensure that my fundamental human rights which both Nigeria and your countries are party to are guaranteed and my life protected.”

NAIJ.com previously reported that the Nigerian police has issued a message to Senator Dino Melaye asking him to appear before it and comply with the court case against him or risk being declared wanted.

The police issued this statement on Saturday, March 25 and accused the senator of deliberately ignoring the request to appear before it in spite of the message sent to him.

The police said that two suspects who were arrested in Kogi claimed the senator gave them firearms to create social unrest.
