You must work with respect for Nigerians - IGP Idris tells policemen

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, has reportedly called on all officers and men of the force to begin to respect the rights of the citizens while discharging their duties, warning that any abuse amounts to corruption and injustice.

Vanguard reports that Idris spoke recently at Umuahia, Abia state, during the opening of a three-day workshop organised in collaboration with Centre for Civil Society and Justice (CCSJ).

Idris, who was represented by the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Zone 9, Umuahia, Hosea Karma, explained that respect for human rights remains fundamental to peaceful coexistence in any society.

The IGP tasked the participants to take advantage of the workshop to improve on their service to society.

“The topic is apt; it reminds us of our role in a democratic environment," pointing out that respect for human rights would reduce conflict in the society.

“Human rights abuse is corruption and corruption is injustice; it is a crime. Corruption is not only when you extort money but when you refuse to do your work because of personal considerations," the IGP said while reminded the policemen of the government’s war against corruption.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) accused the governor of Benue state, Samuel Ortom, and some elements of being behind the calls for President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris.

The AYCF, through its national president, Yerima Shettima, said it was concerned that vested interests wanted Idris sacked for their selfish reasons.

“The IGP's uncompromising war on crime and speedy standardisation of the force operations, is bound to create envy and deliberate misunderstanding by the mischievous interest groups in the country,” the AYCF said as it wondered why those trying to set President Buhari against the Idris pretend that there is a difference between Makurdi and Benue.
