House of Reps demands sack of IGP Idris over Maiduguri police protest

The House of Representatives has called for the immediate removal of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, over the protest by armed police men in Maiduguri, capital of Borno state.

The lawmakers on Wednesday, July 4, asked the federal government to look for a competent replacement for the police boss, Vanguard reports.

Following a motion raised by Kingsley Ogundu Chinda, on matters of public importance, the House resolved to set up an adhoc committee to investigate the issues that led to the protest and return back to the lawmakers within two weeks.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has dismissed media reports that police personnel protested in Maiduguri as a result of non-payment of special duty allowance.

The spokesperson for the force, Jimoh Moshood, in a statement on Monday, July 2, said contrary to the reports, some of the police mobile force personnel on special duty in Maiduguri went to the Borno state police command headquarters on enquiry over the delay in the payment of their special duty allowance in the early hours and not on protest as reported in some media.

Moshood said the Inspector General of Police, (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, thereafter, ordered the commissioner of police, Borno state to address the officers and inform them why there is delay in the payment of their special duty allowance. He said the personnel subsequently returned to their duty posts after the briefing.
