The newspaper review for Tuesday, July 31, leads with the presidency stating that there was no truth in the claims that President Muhammadu Buhari has a hand in the move by minority members of the Benue State House of Assembly to remove the state governor, Samuel Ortom, among other stories.
Vanguard reports that confusion stirred in Benue state, on Monday, July 30, after eight of the 30 members of the House of Assembly protected by heavily armed security operatives barricaded other members, sat in session and raised an impeachment notice against Governor Samuel Ortom.
The eight legislators, all belonging to the All Progressives Congress (APC), who took over the chambers of the House without the mace and the clerk, were protected by heavily armed policemen and operatives of the Department of State Services, who prevented the 22 other members all belonging to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from entering the chambers.

The majority of 22 members immediately relocated to the Banquet Hall of the Government House where they sat with the mace, the clerk of the House in place and suspended seven of the eight members involved.
The former speaker of the House, Terkimbi Ikyange, who led the group of eight, had earlier been suspended for six months.

Adesina said Buhari would never be part of any unconstitutional act. He added that any attempt to link the president with the inglorious past, when minority number of lawmakers removed governors, will not stick.
The statement read: “Even while attending the ECOWAS/ECCAS Summit in Togo, strident attempts were being made to drag President Muhammadu Buhari into the unfolding drama between the executive and the legislature in Benue State.
The Guardian reports that President Muhammadu Buhari has said he is not bothered by the defections in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Responding to a question during an interactive session with the Nigerian community in Togo at the Nigerian Embassy, Lome, Sunday night, President Buhari said most Nigerians appreciated the performance of his administration.

“I am not bothered about the defections. Ordinary Nigerians have developed confidence in us and are defending us. I assure you, majority of Nigerians back home are appreciative of our efforts.”
Buhari, who expressed delight in seeing the Nigerians who had travelled from the five regions of Togo to welcome him in Lome, said he was pleased to hear them commend the performance of his administration.
This Day reports that an independent body, New Watch for Assessment and Monitoring Initiative (NWAMI), formed for the evaluation of the effective implementation or otherwise of governments’ projects, has commended the federal government’s National Social Investment Programme (N-SIP).
The group, at its quarterly meeting recently at Ikeja in Lagos, said the government has done relatively well in touching lives through the investment initiative, which was established in 2016 to tackle unemployment, poverty and hunger across the country.

The national secretary of NWAMI, Olajide Michael Ogundiran, told journalists that the assessment was conducted between January 2017 and June 2018, and it was discovered that people across the 36 states including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, are the direct and indirect beneficiaries of N-SIP.
He maintained that the selection process of beneficiaries was transparent, unbiased, efficient and all-inclusive irrespective of tribal, religious or political affiliations.
