US Senator McCain’s funeral: Donald Trump not invited as Obama, Bush give eulogies

A memorial service for Senator John McCain is taking place in Washington on Saturday, September 1.

Former President George W. Bush and former President Barack Obama are giving eulogies at the service at the Washington National Cathedral.

NAIJ.com notes that both men defeated McCain in his two campaigns to become president, in 2000 and 2008.

The emotional funeral service also has the deceased senator's mother in attendance. Among the early arrivals at the cathedral was McCain’s mother, 106-year-old wheelchair bound Roberta McCain.

CBS News reports that President Donald Trump is not attending the event. However, USA Today reports that Ivanka Trump, PresidentTrump's daughter, and her husband, presidential adviser Jared Kushner, are attending the event.

Another report by CNN also indicates that former Alaska governor, Sarah Palin, who was also McCain’s former presidential running mate was not invited to any of the memorial services.

Palin was rocketed onto the national stage in the summer of 2008 after McCain picked her to be his running mate in the presidential race he would eventually lose to Barack Obama.

Palin mourned McCain in a tweet Saturday night after his death, calling him her "friend."

McCain will be reportedly buried with military honours following a private service at the US Naval Academy Chapel in Annapolis, Maryland, on Sunday, September 2.
