Repentant insurgents flee as angry IDPs move to revenge

- About fifty one Boko Haram insurgents who recently repented have escaped being killed by some people in Maiduguri, Borno

- They were identified as internally displaced persons whose relations were said to have been victims of insurgency

- The repentant insurgents have been evacuated to the Bulumkutu Rehabilitation Centre, to undergo psychosocial de-radicalization

About fifty one repentant Boko Haram insurgents on Saturday, October 13, narrowly escaped being killed by angry internally displaced persons’ in Maiduguri, Borno state whose relations were said to have been victims of insurgency.

Daily Trust reports that the repentant insurgents were first evacuated to the Bulumkutu Rehabilitation Centre, to undergo psychosocial de-radicalization.

They were later moved to the Bakassi camp for onward evacuation to their communities at Gwoza.

A source said: “No sooner were they settled at the Bakassi camp, the IDPs there, most of whom hail from the same Gwoza community, began to identify majority of them as the killers of their relations and, therefore, began to cast intensely angry and vindictive looks at them; and the fire of vengeance raged across their minds.

“As every IDP identified the alleged killer of his/her parents, husband, wife, brothers or sisters, or even his/her entire family, the IDPs thronged together last Monday and moved to pounce on them, intent on killing them.”

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had reported that the chief of Army staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, called on internally displaced persons in Borno North to return home to restart their lives as their communities are now safe and secure.

Buratai made the call at the inauguration of nine gunboats for the Amphibious Task Force Detachment at Baga, for patrol and clearing the remaining Boko Haram terrorists from the Lake Chad waterways.

The army chief said: “Let me use this opportunity to call on the good people of Northern Borno to please, leverage on the deployment of Operation Last Hold to return to their communities which have long been liberated by our gallant troops.“
